Comprehensive Audiological Evaluation

Audiologists at Hearing Clinics of Virginia will use state-of-the-art technology to determine your hearing ability. This process may include a battery of diagnostic procedures to allow our audiologists to make the most appropriate recommendations for your hearing loss.

Discussion of Your Audiological Results

Once you have told us your history and your personal expectations with regard to your hearing, we provide you with detailed advice on the most appropriate products and facilities to meet your requirements:

  • Do you have hearing loss? Which ear?
  • Which type of technology and features in hearing aid is most suitable for you?
  • Do you want to regulate the volume of the hearing aid yourself, or would you prefer a hearing aid that adjusts automatically to any hearing situation?
  • Which aid best suits your hearing loss and your personal situation? A Completely-in-the Ear, In-the-Canal, In-the-Ear (ITE), or Behind-the-Ear (BTE)?

Follow-up Care

Your part is to wear your new hearing aids for a few days in your regular surroundings. You may even want to keep a diary to record your impressions of the sounds you hear. Based upon how well you can hear in your everyday surroundings, your audiologist may make additional adjustments to your hearing aids if necessary. They may also offer tips for communicating while wearing hearing aids, encourage you to practice inserting and removing the hearing aids, and instruct you in cleaning and caring for your hearing aids as well as proper battery use.

It is important to understand that learning to listen with hearing aids takes time and a degree of patience in the beginning. You may need to learn to filter out unwanted sounds, just as you used to do with normal hearing. It's also important to be realistic and not to expect 100-percent hearing in every situation.

It may be necessary to return to the audiologist for one or more adjustments of your hearing aids. The goal of hearing aids and support devices is to help you obtain the best hearing possible in most situations given the conditions of your impairment.

Our Commitment to you

Our 40-day trial period and scheduled follow-up appointments allow patients to wear their new hearing aids with confidence. Our Complete Hearing HealthCare program, included with most digital hearing aids, provides a maintenance plan, free batteries for the life of the hearing aid, and follow-up care.

Our follow-up care with our hearing aid wearers is one of the unique factors of our clinic.

The Ear Impression

Since an appropriate fit is a critical component in the amplification process, an earmold impression will be taken of your ear. This cast will assist in the production of your custom-made hearing aid based on the exact contours of your ears. We can then ensure that your hearing aid fits perfectly.

The Fitting

To determine the optimal settings for your hearing aids, we use the results from your audiological evaluation, as well as taking into consideration information you have shared with us regarding your listening needs.

During your initial fitting, we will take the time to ensure your comfort with your new hearing aids, including changing the batteries and insertion and removal of the instruments. You should wear your new hearing aids for a few days in your regular surroundings.

Based upon what you tell us about how well you can hear in your everyday surroundings, we will make any necessary programming adjustments to your hearing aids at your follow-up appointments.
